Welcome to Just Poets

Just Poets is a poetry-centered non-profit (501c3) organization based in Rochester, NY. Our goal is to celebrate both poets and poetry by encouraging and supporting area poets at all levels of ability to improve their work and find their individual poetic voices. We seek to do this through workshops, publications, readings and networking within the literary community. Just Poets also seeks, as part of its mission, to increase the public's awareness and appreciation of poetry through readings, a speakers bureau, written articles and other educational avenues.

Meetings are held the first Saturday of every month, usually in the COP Conference Room at the Campus Center St John Fisher College.

Readings: A featured member reads on the second Thursday of each month, at Barnes and Noble, Pittsford Plaza, followed by an open mic.

Other Just Poets events are announced on our calendar, in the Poet Talk newsletter, and on the Rochester NY Arts Council regional calendar at http://www.artsrochester.org

Visitors are welcome to all open events, may attend as many as three meetings prior to joining, and will receive one free copy of Poet Talk, the Just Poets newsletter.

Membership is offered to adult poets of the Greater Rochester area, who endorse and support the mission of the group. New members are welcome to join at any time.

Member benefits include:

A subscription to the newsletter, Poet Talk

Special Member-Only programs & events.

Peer group poetry workshops.

A publication opportunity with our annual anthology, Le Mot Juste.

Sad News

Salvatore J. Parlato, a member of Just Poets, and husband of our treasurer, Dolores Parlato, died on Tuesday morning, November 18 after having suffered a stroke on Wednesday November 12.  They had just returned from a trip to  Europe.

In addition to being a poet, Sal was a former teacher, activist, and a writer.  His presence and gentle humor will be greatly missed by all of us.

Villanelle inspiration -- thanks Maxine Kumin and Donna!

Maxine Kumin exercise :  writing a Villanelle... if anything, yes, you learn a lot!

I never would have thought I would ever write about musk ox!  Thanks to Donna, David Michael and Kathy for presenting the inspiration from the Dodge yesterday!  In our group, we all were aware that we were using up our "three time" rule... hmmmm.  in this Villanelle, I used up one of my throws at "passion"... All best to all.

Survival

What last word would you say, should today be the day

what passion will ax the sound in your throat

like a  musked ox kissing a saber-toothed stray?

This Pleistocene beast almost died away

in spite of 4 stomachs and a thick wooly coat.

But the question remains: what to say if today is the day.

Imagine if the ground sloth or mammoth, mumbled away

crashing extinct before bridging the moat

as the musked ox kissed them and the saber-toothed stray.

But back to ox to ox: scimitar horns  have their say

under helmeted boss lowered to protect the throat.

The male wins his mates, un-saber-toothed, not stray.

The abandoned tiger had not quiviut to warm him on his way

unlike ox harem, swelling under  five-pound coat.

What last word would anyone say should today be the day

It is not musk but compelling must do we think the way

to survive like lost sailors thrown out of their boat

without thinking, what last word to say (should today be the day)

what kiss to give, musk-ox-like, to that outgoing tiger stray.

imagine 365.. not days, but years, A.D.

Measure of cat

turning of the page

light falling into time-drifts

spin-thrift flakes oh 9

two thousand and a last tail

stretching the interval to start a ninth.
